From Hanedan Hotel, we can arrange a taxi from the hotel to any other destination within İstanbul, however while you are outside of the hotel, you will have to arrange or hail an available taxi yourself. When taking a taxi, make sure the driver turns on the meter so that your fare will be properly calculated. there are also ‘gece’ (night) and ‘gündüz’ (day) rates on the meter – at night they charge almost double. When arranging a taxi from the hotel for you we can ask approximately how much your fare will be to your chosen destination.
To take the tram, there are kiosks near the tram stations where you can purchase ‘jetons’ (tokens) for approximately 1.5 TL. Then you must insert the token into the turnstile at the entrance to the tram platform to enter. If the tram doors do not automatically open, you must press the button to open them. The tram can get very crowded at times, so make sure to move towards the doors when you get near your stop, so that you are able to exit in time. They also may stop short suddenly due to cars crossing the tracks, so for your safety, make sure you are holding on securely. The trams run from approximately 6am to 12:30am.
Although the Otobus (bus) system is quite extensive and has lines running all over İstanbul, it can be a bit confusing to manage, as the bus routes are not posted anywhere. If you are up for an adventure, you can find the bus routes online at the İETT website, http://www.iett.gov.tr/en/saat/hareketsaati.php?hid=hat. The fare costs approximately 1.5 TL – you pay the bus attendent (not the driver) who sıts at the front of the bus. When you want to get off, press the RED buttons on the poles labeled ‘DUR’ and the driver will stop at the next bus stop. Please note that the buses stop often, so it may not be the most expedient way to travel. For short stays, taxis are much more direct & quicker.
For traveling to destinations north of the Taksim area (such as Levent & Nişantaşı, you can take the METRO. From Taksim Square, look for the M signs marking the metro entrance. You can purchase jetons (tokens) from the windows near the turnstiles. Insert the token in the turnstile to enter and follow the ‘tren gidiş’ signs for the train platforms. Please note that from Sultanahmet, you can take the TRAM to Kabataş, then the short Funicular to Taksim Square, and then the Metro. Don’t forget to take the Nostalgic Tram that runs along İstiklal Caddesi from Taksim Square to Tünel for an historic & scenic (but slow) ride.
